Mid-January. This is when New Year's resolutions often fade like winter sunlight. Whether you've stuck to your exercise goals or not, here's what matters most: Keep Going!

Take a moment to think about why you started in the first place. The real power of exercise isn't measured in pounds lost or yards gained – it's about living life fully. When muscles ache, winter winds howl, or uncertainty creeps in, remember why you started. And if you need that extra push, find an accountability partner or consider working with a fitness professional.

While this is a golf newsletter, my relationship with exercise goes far beyond the course. Here's what drives me to stay active:

Playing with Joy

I want to get down on the ground and play with my future grandchildren, then pop right back up without thinking twice about it.

Keeping Up with Family

Those impromptu football and basketball games with my nephews? I might not match their speed, but I want to jump in without dreading the week-long recovery.

Daily Freedom

Simple things matter. With challenging knees, every pain-free trip up the stairs is a victory I work to maintain.

Managing Weight Thoughtfully

Yes, exercise can support weight loss, but it's more complex than that. As Mitch from Aretas Physical Therapy explains in this week's podcast, weight management is about overall calorie balance. (More on that below.)

Staying in the Game

Walking 18 holes is a privilege I never take for granted. I know that once I stop, getting back will be twice as challenging.

Golf Performance

If exercise adds a few yards to my drives or a bit more swing speed? I'll gladly take those benefits – but they're not my primary motivation.

Here's the truth

Exercise isn't about instant gratification. Unlike the quick dopamine hits from social media, its rewards unfold over years and decades. It's an investment in your quality of life – not just for golf, but for every moment that matters.

ENJOYMENT & EXERCISE

Transform Your Off-Season into Your Power Season

The winter months aren't just a pause in your golf game – they're your secret weapon for next season's success. While your clubs might be stored away, this is your prime opportunity to build the foundation of a stronger, more consistent golf game.

Think of winter as your performance lab, where you can craft the strength, flexibility, and endurance that separate good golfers from great ones. Here's your blueprint for turning the off-season into your competitive advantage:

Core Power Development

Focus on exercises that build your golf engine – your core, legs, and back. Incorporate squats, lunges, and planks to develop the explosive power that drives those crucial shots. Add rowing exercises to strengthen your back for better rotation and control.

Mobility Mastery

Your swing is only as good as your range of motion. Consider adding yoga or Pilates to your routine – they're perfect for developing the fluid movement patterns that define an excellent golf swing. These practices also build the balance and stability that keep you solid through every stroke.

Endurance Excellence

Golf demands more stamina than most realize. Choose cardio activities you enjoy – whether it's running, cycling, or swimming. This foundation of fitness will keep you sharp and focused, especially during those crucial final holes.

Golf-Specific Training

Bridge the gap between the gym and the green with targeted drills. Use medicine balls for rotational power, resistance bands for swing-specific strength, and weighted clubs to groove your perfect swing pattern.

Strategic Recovery

Your body transforms during rest, not work. Prioritize quality sleep, maintain proper nutrition, and use recovery tools like foam rollers to keep your muscles ready for action. Consider this your maintenance program for peak performance.

Remember, while others see winter as a break from golf, you're using it as a springboard to elevate your game. Every workout brings you closer to your best season yet.
